In the hustle-bustle of this twenty-four seven world, I guess it’s only natural to wish for the seemingly simpler, less-harried times of a bygone era. With cell phones, voice mail, pagers, text messaging, instant mail, and e-mail a part of our everyday, interrupt me anytime existence, sending or receiving a hand written letter seems so much more romantic than the methods available in our electronic age. What must have it been like to have a long anticipated, beautifully addressed envelope delivered to your door by the postman, penned in the most elegant of calligraphic style, and closed with a monogrammed wax seal? How romantic to have the secret words or passions of a lover revealed from beneath a carefully sealed flap, with the sound of the voice only accessible from the recesses of your memory? It’s a lovely little fantasy that appears so civilized but, I have to say, I’m grateful to be living in this fantastic time and I know my modern letters are far more plentiful than those that required weeks of ocean voyage and pony express transit time.
